Acne scars are embarrassing and an unwanted reminder of the acne battles faced in the past. There are multiple types of acne scars and depending on the type of scars a person has type of treatment will vary.

The Types of Acne Scarring

  • Ice Pick Scars
Named for the crevasse pits on the skin that look like someone attacked the skin with a small ice pick. Ice pick scars are most often found on the cheeks and chin.
  • Boxcar Scars
Little scars the resemble chicken pox scars. The scars are oval shaped depressions in the skin with clearly defined edges. They can be square in shape, hence the boxcar name. Boxcar scars are commonly found on the cheeks and temple.
  • Rolling Scars
One of the more serious types of acne scarring, rolling scars look like rolling hills. They get their protruding look from the damaged tissue underneath the skin. The only acne scar treatments that work are the subcision treatments.
  • Hypertrophic Scars
Scars that look like protruding small red bumps. These are the least serious of the scars and can be caused by any wound – not just acne. Hypertrophic scars usually fade in time.
  • It’s very important that you pick the right doctor to pursue an scar treatment with. There are a few things you can do that may help you find the best possible dermatologist:

    1. Visit several dermatologists for alternate opinions
    2. Compare treatment quotes given with Google-searched costs
    3. Look at the doctors’ portfolio of before-and-after patient scar treatment pictures

One thing to be aware of is that acne scar treatments may eliminate scars temporarly – the scars may come back. This depends on a variety of factors such as treatment type, your age, and your skin type. Make sure to ask lots of questions and do a significant amount of research before choosing a treatment option.

    Available Acne Scar Treatments
To effectively treat your scarring, you need to identify exactly what form of acne scarring you may have. Each scar treatment has its list of pros and cons, so it’s imperative that you do your research first, before pursuing any of the treatment options. Every individual’s skin is unique and reacts differently to each scar treatment, either for the better or for the worse. It’s certainly not uncommon for acne scar treatments to make the scars look worse!

    Subcision
    Costing about $1000
Costing about $1000, subcision is a process that involves detaching the upper skin layer from the tissue below which allows a flow of blood through the open channel. This flow of blood then pushes the skin up in the affected areas, reducing the appearing so scars. Subcision is usually used to treat rolling scars.

    Punch Scar Treatments
The basic procedure behind punch scar treatments is to cut out the scar tissue from the surrounding area and replacing it with a skin craft. The cost is usually about $150 per treatment and each treatment involves repairing a single scar (usually).

    Chemical Peels
A non-surgical acne scar treatment that involves the application of chemicals to the face to remove the top layer of skin. The result is a much “smoother” look to the face. There are “strengths” of chemical peel treatments, the cost for the most effective being around $1000 per treatment.

    Dermabrasion
A mechanical process that involves taking a rotating disk and sanding off the top layer of skin. This can be quite a painful process and the scarring may return in the future. Costs range about $2000 per treatment.
    Laser Resurfacing
Probably the most expensive acne scar treatment out there. The process is the same as in the Dermabrasion treatment except that a laser is used instead of a rotating disk. Expect to pay between $2500 - $3000 per treatment.

    Acne Scar Creams
Without a doubt the most popular and cheapest form of acne scar treatment are acne scar creams. There are various types of scar screams floating around the market. Some may work and some may not work. You may or may not have success with them. However, there are two treatments that we recommend:

    1. Acne creams that contain vitamin E mixed with Cocoa butter.
    2. Acne creams containing hydrofluoric acid – make sure you consult a doctor first as applying too much hydrofluoric acid can damage your skin.

If you want to know how to get rid of acne scars, you’ll have to do the research. These are the most common treatments you’ll find. Note that the given list is not completely exhaustive, but it covers the relevant ones.
